A First-Timer's Guide to Renting a Car in Malaysia
If it's your first time renting a car in Malaysia, the process is straightforward once you know what to expect. Here's a rundown so there are no surprises on pickup day.
What You'll Need
Most rental companies, including Ventura, will ask for:
- A valid driver's licence (Malaysian, or an international driving permit for foreign visitors)
- A form of identification (IC or passport)
- A deposit, usually refundable, held as security for the rental period
Having these ready in advance makes the handover much faster.
Understanding the Deposit
The deposit isn't an extra fee — it's a refundable hold in case of damage, traffic violations, or late returns. As long as the car comes back in the same condition it left in, the deposit is returned in full.
Booking Ahead vs. Walking In
Booking in advance is always recommended, especially around public holidays and school breaks when availability tightens up. It also means the car can be prepared and cleaned ahead of your pickup time instead of scrambling on short notice.
Delivery vs. Self-Pickup
Depending on the rental company, you may be able to have the car delivered directly to your hotel, home, or the airport, rather than travelling to a rental office. This is worth asking about if you're arriving with luggage or on a tight schedule.
Before You Drive Off
A quick walkaround with the rental team before you leave is good practice — note any existing scratches or dents, confirm the fuel level, and make sure you understand the return terms (same fuel level, same location, agreed drop-off time).
